My goal as an artist is to create emotional impact on the viewer, to find a point of view that
is unique and to interpret my reactions to simple subjects that can be taken for granted.
I intend to create a response from people who view my work, particularly in my portraiture
Initially a landscape painter, I became intrigued and excited about still life and portraiture. My
initial thought processes are actually just that –thought processes. I see the painting in my minds
eye first and often dwell upon the idea of that painting for days. I may look at references—
browse through museums or position myself with other fine artists for sharing of the art language.
As the image imprints upon my mind, I proceed to my canvas with composition, cropping, and
drawing then to the first layering of paint beginning with the umber study and values.
The materials and techniques I use are time tested as I often use linen canvas or a smooth panel
that I have prepared myself with 3-8 coats of gesso. It is fairly obvious to one who knows
somewhat of the art process to see that I am fascinated with the Dutch style of Chiaroscuro
paintings. The use of intense light against a rich darkness, the depth and mystery --the use of
several layers and stages of this painting process—all are sources of impact in my still life.
The Classical style has been a favorite of mine for years now and I have not gone from that for
my still life painting. I see that in recent paintings I have begun to explore more the palette of
Rembrandt with many earth tones and golden highlights. I often wrestle with realism as I dislike
photo realism with hard edges and flat planes, therefore, I see myself using more hidden –soft
edges within the shadows and thoughtfully saving my hard edges for that special impact area.
“Recently I spoke to someone about the direction of their portrait and during our conversation he
said to me that to him “art” is the membrane of the vast experience of life. I really liked that. It is
indeed that experience of life, that emotional response that becomes the power of the work itself.”
I try to share that striking glimpse of beauty with each brush stroke to my canvas.
